Haringey Council invites residents to see this unique installation at the Artway Gallery

Svet Luni Serafin

Event date : Saturday 3 December 2011

Svet Luni Serafin is loosely translated from Russian and Polish as 'Moon Lit Angel'.

The installation is a fusion of the works by Russian sculptor Olga Lunina who creates one of a kind hand crafted dolls who have been inspired, and likened to the work of, Tim Burton.

Piotr Serafin and Brigitte Antal are creative carpenters who 'upcycle' furniture and motoring components - their works have been likened to that of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and the French movie 'Micmacs'.

Olga Lunina and couple Piotr and Brigitte, were brought together as strangers by Artway Gallery, but their works compliment eachother in an extraordinary way, as if they'd been working together all along.

The exhibition is currently on at Artway Gallery and runs until 9 December, but we have a special event day on 3 December, 11am-5pm which is free entry (voluntary contribution).

Start and finish time: 11am-5pm.

The world’s largest porcelain manufacturer is celebrating the 185th anniversary of its foundation in 1826

and the 160th anniversary of its most renowned decorative pattern.

The classic, timeless, Chinese-inspired pattern was created for the Great Exhibition held in London in 1851, where Queen Victoria spotted the tea set and ordered pieces adorned with the pattern for Windsor Castle.

The pattern was subsequently named after her, and preserved this name for the past 160 years.

The timeless pattern featuring butterflies and peonies remained popular over the past 160 years and

became synonymous with Herend.

In celebration of this jubilee year, Herend masters have created several new, modern variations, using colour pairings of warm and cool tones to depict the lush basic pattern, and placing emphasis on small details, rendering the pattern eternal and keeping its myth alive in the 21st century.

How to make Royal Wedding party crowns

Royal wedding party crowns

I love it when people bring something to spice up the party!
Why bother with boring mass produced decorations?
Surprise your host with something simple and fun that people will remember after the party!

Get everyone to collect pages with Kate Middleton's and Prince William's pictures from all different newspapers. This could be a bit naughty, but if you don't have enough time just get lots of copies of the Evening Standard on your way home.
Ask a couple of friends to volunteer.
If the party is only for up to ten people, you'll manage on your own.

Nothing difficult, promise!
You will need:
newspapers
glue ( any paper glue)
a pen
a stapler
a pair of scissors.

Open the newspaper in the middle and get yourself a double sheet of paper. Cut along the sheet to create inch wide strips.
Don't try to get them very straight or anything like that.
You need one long strip per person so for example if 15 people were invited, make
3 more=18
just in case.
Try one piece around your head in a way that the ends meet at the front in the middle. You are now measuring the area that needs to have pictures on, the rest will be just hanging down at the back. Hold the strip together on your forehead and keep the strip folded while you are taking it off. Mark this point on both sides and lay the paper flat on the floor. This is the prototype.

Cut Kate and Will pictures and get a pile of them. Share the pictures between your long strips.
Start glueing the pictures from pen mark to pen mark.
Make sure you put the glue on the middle of your larger pictures. This will prevent them from being floppy and hanging upside down.
Lay the next strip under the prototype and copy the pen marks. Get glueing again. Repeat with all of them and allow them to dry.
Don't forget to take the stapler with you to the party!
The crowns will have to be fastened on the guests' heads by stapling the ends on the back.

Royal Wedding Party Decorations

With couple of weeks left to the Royal Wedding Party, these ideas could help you to create an Eco-friendly, cheap yet unforgettable setting!
Here is how to make beautiful Union roses garlands
( they look cool mixed with bunting or just as they are)
Unite your girlfriends and get making! Don't worry, no learned skills needed at all, we've got it all in our genes.

What to bring?

Tell your girlfriends to check their wardrobe for 1 to 3 unwanted items in:
royal blue, red, white or a mix of these.
Any item is welcome! Knitted jumpers are harder to work with but light knitted fabric is fine.
Plain, stripy, spotty, checked, floral, whatever they've got!

Tell them to have a rummage for a needle, a pair of scissors and cotton in any colour.

Get some needles and thread to have at home just in case, it will make life easier. You'll also need to provide a reel of string or ribbon of the cheapest kind for the roses to be sewn on.
You might consider getting a bottle of rose to go with the roses.

Tell your girlfriends not to get frightened!
This is a cool free activity with very little sewing and lots of fun!

Everyone ready?
Here comes the fun bit!
Get your scissors and get at the pieces!
Cut wildly along the seems to get sheets of fabric. Don't worry about cutting it nicely!
Just take them all apart. It's a therapeutic activity after a long week at work. Cut trough the fabric as if you were cutting trough your problems.

Now get a large bowl from the kitchen.
Start cutting round petal like bits, about the size of your palm. All shapes and sizes please, the rounder the better.
No regular circles, just like Mother Nature did.
You won't find two identical petals in one flower.
Pop your petals in the bowl everyone! While filling the bowl, you'll start gossiping in no time. It's just another one of Nature's rules.
Thread your needles ladies and make a big knot on the end of the yarn.
Hold your needle upwards and stick 10 petals on it one by one. Chose all sorts of patterns. The needle should go trough each petal somewhere on the edge.

Once this is done, stitch up and down in the middle a couple of times to hold all the petals in place.
That's it, one flower done! Don't cut the thread, fasten directly onto the string!
And so it's nearly done. By the end of the night you'll have an original decoration which you can reuse some other time too!
Wasn't it easy?

And you're ready for the party!

The first to comprehensively explore Aestheticism
'The Cult Of Beauty' is an amazing exhibition!

Aestheticism is an artistic movement (1860- 1900)
which sought to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Victorian Era.
You could be finding yourself wondering what exactly they found ugly in Victorian Times?
We tend to forget that this is basically the industrial age with large factories and utilitarian social philosophies.
For us, Queen Victoria's reign means beauty, harmony, and prosperity almost by definition. Let alone all those beautiful images with bunches of forget me not, partridges, happy children, charming buildings and gorgeous hats.
Well the Aesthetic movement could have contributed to this quite a lot.
Centered on the doctrine that art exists for it's beauty alone, Aestheticism wanted art divorced from morality, political or didactic purposes.
The attitudes of the movement were represented in France by the famous phrase coined by the philosopher Victor Cousin: 'l'art pour l'art'
Good to know !
Somehow I have never linked this phrase to the Aesthetic movement!

The exhibition features paintings, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, wallpapers, photographs and costumes, as well as architectural and interior designs.

Included will be major paintings by Whistler, Rossetti, Leighton, and Burne-Jones. Architecture and interior design will be represented by the works of Edward Godwin, George Aitchison, Philip Webb and Thomas Jeckyll, among others. Art furnishings designed by these and others, including William Morris, Christopher Dresser, Bruce Talbert, Henry Batley, and Walter Crane will showcase not only the designers and manufacturers they worked for, but also new retailers, such as Liberty's.

Now I'm not a great fan of replacing the real world with virtual stuff but I have to confess this made my heart skip. Read on to find out why:

"We wanted Nursery Rhymes with StoryTime to look as if it had been hand-built. To do that we literally hand-built it first out of natural media using card, paper, pencils and our hearts. Nursery Rhymes merges the illustrations of Denslow, created over a century ago, with the very latest in physics simulations. We love the fact the app appears to have been built out of a torn-up and rearranged copy of Denslow’s original book Mother Goose. That was what this project was all about – blending the old school with the new school! We couldn’t have done one without the other.

Nursery Rhymes with StoryTime is aimed not only at children, but at the parents who ultimately purchase the book (after being nagged relentlessly by their kids). We wanted to attract them with a hand crafted interactive book that would take them on a journey down memory lane."

And the magic bit that I need to get used to...

"We added a sprinkling of magic dust on top of the perfectly crafted Nursery Rhymes app. It’s the app’s USP, but it doesn’t detract from the beauty and craft of the main content of it. Of course, no kids book is complete without an adult to read it. But adults aren’t always around. So, Nursery Rhymes uses an amazing new technology called StoryTime which allows parents to read the story to their child remotely. It takes advantage of Apple’s Game Centre service to allow two-way voice chat, and lets the parent control the page turns whilst the kid interacts with each page in wonderful ways. The Silent Film lamp

Have you ever wondered what makes us ''vintage lovers'' or ''antique lovers''?
Love for past times and old designs is the presence of the absence. While everything new that surrounds us ages so rapidly, we reach out for things that are older than us and new for us. There is something magical about all those interiors and objects that are absent and that we can never be present in.
They are almost like a brand new continent for our dreams to explore. They are exotic but safe. They are us and they are someone else, or many other people and sorrows at the same time.

Vintage is a bit like an old silent film without the one- sentence subtitles. It's thrilling, it's great, it's a bit like us and it's very different too. All that was said but you cannot hear it, everything beyond the black and white images is left for your imagination to complete.

These are the ideas that led to creating the Silent Film lamp.

A silent film would never mean the same to us and to the people that lived in the Inter War era. There is no way we can get the same experience they got in an Art Deco cinema but we can celebrate and explore past beauty.

Imagining the past will be the same exciting as it was for them to imagine the future in the first quarter of the 20th century.

we returned to our beloved Metalwork collection in the V&A

Personal accessories are the most amazing little treasures. This Victorian silver envelope used to be the latest "must have" for stamps.
Production of stamp cases offered a wide array of combination with one, two, three and occasionally four different compartments; one for matches, one for a striker and a third compartment which could be used as a stamp dispenser.
Many stamp boxes were created in the 1890s when the advent of popular travel and the appearance of tourist novelties were beginning to be represented.
Queen Victoria decided to encourage writing with the first widely available stamp- the Penny Black, which allowed more and more people to write.
This little empty silver envelope is in a way the symbol of all the effort made for us to be able to write. Funny how meanwhile we are about to forget our own handwriting as we type away on our I phones on the train...

Don't you just love Brick Lane Market? Sunday Upmarket 12.12.2010 - for the last time this year

Isn't it just great to spend some time browsing on Brick Lane?

Oh yes it is. And the same good fun being on the other side, behind the stall. There is something special about the place, the people around you and the customers who come to see you among the traders. It's an iconic scenery where traders and customers are all part of an amazing play. Every single thing from the very first little chat to the moment when you place your make in the bag and you give it away is like an ancient ritual:

Look, Touch, Smile, Talk
Connect, Ask, Answer, Touch,
Smile and Go having a part of our world on you.
It's a magical bond between so many different people and all different cultures! The stuff on our stall would mean something different to each and every person, but one thing is certain, this experience as a whole is what they all came to find. For a Latin American person the paper mache baubles seem more of a sacred object than Victorian hot air balloons- which they are inspired by. However, one message will be conveyed by each item to everyone. Brick Lane and what you find here is just simply London today "in the making".

Also the feel of all the different objects does not need translation. Touch is universal and elementary. We are using an array of all different recycled materials for our products so it's great to see people exploring the different textures with their fingers.
Next time we should make a note for the stall: "please touch!"
You know the feeling, when you walk by an interesting stall and you feel that urge to touch everything. I believe if someone is reaching to touch an item on your stall, that's nearly a compliment in itself!

Selling the " holding hands" Peace Wreath quite early in the day was almost like a symbol of the invisible bond between traders and visitors as well as the bond between past, present and future.
This lovely reused doily wreath made to resemble lace gloves from past times is now in a house where it is loved and will fade away without spoiling the future.

Best sellers this time were the Bird feeders. They are a replica to Victorian gas lamps and are made of recycled plastic bottles and reused wire.
We were offering to add an original design onto the bird feeders on request. We are soon launching a range of Customized gifts and the some of the bird feeders were the first items to get a little personal touch from customers, such as cute little birds running around.

Our first Bar stool made of old scooter parts was displayed at the market.
The seat is one of a 60's Innocenti scooter.
We have named it Scool as it's basically a cool scooter stool.
While being pretty stable,you can sort of ride it trough the room if you wanted to which appealed to all our male customers.
We've still got it so let us know if you wanted to have a go!

One of Pete's creations went to Yorkshire today, wrapped in recycled packaging and loved by its new owner! It's a power mains switch box transformed into a key-box. We were so happy to see one of our beloved pieces traveling far from London and starting a brand new second life.
Isn't it amazing to imagine the journey of such items?

Just think of it all, how the scenery changes around an item, how different people touch it, move it, look at it and expect different things from it.
This is what we find most fascinating about our work an using recycled materials in general:
Offering a new life to an old item, sending it to a new location, on a different mission.
There is also more to a market than just "selling"
It's looking into people's eyes and seeing that wonderful sparkling " I like that! "
It's not even" us" making these items and "them", the customers.
It's "we".
We share the same values, we are seeking for the lost value of an item, we are looking to get the beautiful crafty look of vintage or even antique pieces.
This is how a recycled washing machine bowl turned into a fruit bowl will always remind a lovely lady we met today of lost and found values of the past.
The painted image of a Brighton beach on the bowl will be evoking the Victorian Era and will be helping to remember the past and remember the future.

I regret not having taken a picture of this sewing machine when I have first seen it...

We didn't know it actually was the last breath of the nineteenth century trapped in a hard shell of modern waste...

This beauty was sleeping under layers of rubbish and mud, waiting for someone to take a side road in Kent only to discover her.

After long hours of washing, cleaning, polishing and caressing, here is the beautiful Jones Family CS sewing machine from 1895!
